February & March
Happy New Year! We love having everyone back at school this month, refreshed and ready to learn. We have been enjoying the warmer weather that most of this month has given us and have been focusing our literacy and math based around a theme of snowmen. We have done studies on the books All You Need for a Snowman, Snowmen at Night, and Sneezy the Snowman. We have learned about repetitive and predictive text, fact versus fiction, sequencing events into beginning, middle, and end, and forming our own ideas if we were to write about some of the characters in these stories.
We are looking forward to starting a class reading challenge to read 100 books by the end of this school year! Through this adventure, we will learn math concepts of polling and tallying (how many liked/disliked the story), statistics, graphing, and counting in groups of 5. If we can reach our goal of reading 100 books, we will celebrate with a class ice cream party at the end of June! To kick off this challenge, we will begin our Fairy Tales unit in February with an in-depth focus on renditions of Little Red Riding Hood, The 3 Billy Goats Gruff and The 3 Little Pigs.
November, December & January
The first few months of school have gone by in an exciting blur! How are we already moving into November? We have had an amazing time taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather and have been lucky to have enjoyed a lot of our learning outdoors. We have been working exploring the season of fall, leaves and pumpkins this past month - math concepts of comparison (size, colour and sorting) for leaves, the life cycle of leaves and pumpkins, and different colours of leaves and pumpkins (did you know that they grow blue pumpkins in Australia and black pumpkins in Japan??). We are looking forward to spending the next few months looking closely at how people, animals and nature adapt to changing colder climates through hibernation, migration and bodily changes. On the note of colder weather - we would love to still spend time outside when possible and safe to do so! Please send warm, winter outdoor gear for your child (hats, mittens, boots, snowsuit, etc.) so that everyone can have fun outside!
September & October
We have been so happy to welcome our class back to the 2024-2025 school year! It’s been a wonderful couple of weeks spending time getting to know each of our students and learning each of their personalities, interests and dislikes. We have been taking advantage of the nice weather and spending time outside daily when we can. This week we have started a brief introduction to numeral math concepts with a small All About Me in Numbers project where we’re learning about our ages, number of people in our families, how many letters are in our names and how many centimeters tall we are. We are so excited to spend this year learning together!
