February & March

Happy New Year! We are so happy to be back together in our classroom after a well-deserved Winter Break. Thank you to all our families who came and supported our students during the Winter Concert. What a wonderful afternoon of music and celebration! This month we finished our read aloud book, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, and watched the movie to compare and contrast the novel, and film, using a Venn Diagram.

Students have chosen A Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly as the next class read. We’ve also been learning about Chinese New Year, our zodiacs and what characteristics we embody, while doing art projects using switch work and creating props in preparation for when we celebrate Lunar New Year at the end of the month. We’ve started exploring colour theory this term, and students are learning about primary, secondary, and complimentary colours. We’re excited for this to inspire our art moving forward. This term our swimming days will now be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Library will continue on Fridays, as will Wednesday music time with Dylan. Looking forward to recognizing the amazing year our students have had so far!

November, December & January

Happy Fall Everyone! Our class has been loving watching the seasons change out of our big, beautiful windows. We can see the colours changing and the leaves falling while overlooking the river.  We have been collecting leaves to use for an investigative science unit and are excited to learn more about the parts of a leaf, and their different characteristics. Our class is enjoying learning the “letter of the day” and creating our very own alphabet books. We will continue to read The Wild Robot during our mid-day sensory regulation time, and are excited to compare and contrast the new film and the book once we are done.

Later in November, our class will be going on a field trip with Darcy’s class to the Calgary Philharmonic to see Babar. If you’d like to volunteer on this fieldtrip and come with us, please connect with our teacher, Pamela. We are also looking forward to celebrating the Winter Solstice and learning about what this represents here on Treaty 7 Territory. Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

September & October

Happy Back to School! We are so excited to welcome Asha, Bibi Ayesha, Enoch, Foster, Japleen, Jennie, Kathy and Roseveen to our classroom community. We started the school year learning about each other and ourselves, specifically our names and their meanings. We have been engaging in art activities connected to story time, which our class has been enjoying, and trying to get outside to appreciate the sunshine any chance we can! Students chose the novel, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown for our first novel study. Connected to this, we are excited to explore the mathematical curricular link of the geometric attributes of shapes as we build our own robots from a variety of materials. We will also explore the scientific curricular link of Life Systems as our students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals, and consider their relationship to humans and, in our case, robots.

We know this Grade 5 level novel will offer many learning opportunities for us to flex our reading powers and are excited to see what adventures main character Roz embarks on. Staff Amy, Rosaline, Wendy and Pamela are looking forward to a fun and successful year together with our class!
