February & March
Our students actively engaged in nature-based mathematics by counting and comparing leaves of different sizes - big, medium and small. During gym activities, they enhanced their sequencing skills (first-then), spatial awareness (up-down), and understanding of quantities through movement-based games. In addition, students explored shapes and numbers by creating their own 'shape monsters,' carefully counting and assembling each piece with creativity and precision. In literacy, we read various books and conducted group discussions, reviewing characters, their personalities, settings and story sequences. Students also reflected on their personal preferences, counting how many books they enjoyed and which ones they found less engaging.
We recently celebrated Family Literacy Week and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents who joined us and participated in our literacy activities. Looking ahead, our upcoming lessons will focus on signs of spring and our new science unit on plant growth.
November, December & January
The students dove into the vibrant changes of fall with enthusiasm, engaging in a variety of hands-on activities. They explored the season’s shifting colors by blending primary and secondary hues to create beautiful autumn-inspired art. During our Terry Fox Run celebration, students crafted artwork honoring Terry Fox’s legacy, encouraging both creativity and a deeper awareness of his impact. To recognize Orange Shirt Day, we held meaningful discussions and activities centered on Truth and Reconciliation. We also read a Cree language book, Askiw Meskocipayowina (The Seasons), about the seasons, learning about seasonal transitions and discussing weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor activities.
In numeracy, we connected math with nature by creating and counting through art, blending mathematics with creativity in an outdoor setting. For sensory exploration, students enjoyed a pumpkin-carving activity where they could touch, smell and observe the pumpkin to help deepen their understanding of the five senses. In addition, we made shape monsters while counting each part as we assembled them. In the coming months, we will continue with hands-on activities to explore the butterfly life cycle and the planets in our solar system.
September & October
We are so excited to welcome students to our classroom! We have had a great time getting back into routines, school activities and learning. We had so much fun learning about each other. The months of August and September are all about exploring the vibrant world of colors. Just like the beautiful colors of the leaves and flowers, we have been enjoying various colorful learning activities in our class. For this month, our curriculum focuses on colors, as well as observing seasonal changes. We are blending the magic of colors with activities that delve into communication, science and art. We will explore primary and secondary colors. The students will channel their creativity by mixing different colors and shades to reveal exciting combinations. This year is going to be so much fun and we are excited to have such a wonderful group of students and staff to spend every day with.
